In Subang Jaya · USJ 3, we came across a learning environment that takes a slightly different approach.

Alongside foundational learning, children are also introduced to hands-on activities, science exploration, creative projects and real-life experiences. Instead of simply listening to the teacher, children are encouraged to observe, try, ask questions and discover things for themselves.

For children who are naturally curious and always eager to ask “why?” and “what happens if...?”, this kind of learning environment gives them more opportunities to participate actively.

🪁 Learning Beyond the Classroom: Making & Testing Paper Dragonflies

One of the classroom activities involves children creating their own paper dragonflies.

From folding, drawing and assembling, to bringing their creations outdoors for a test flight, children are not just completing a craft project — they also get to observe what happens in real time.

It may look like play, but the activity naturally encourages hands-on skills, observation, experimentation and problem-solving.

🔬 Turning “Why?” Into Simple Science Exploration

Ages 4–6 are often the peak “why?” years. 😊

Instead of always giving children the answer straight away, simple experiments can encourage them to observe first, make a guess and then discover the outcome together with the teacher.

🎨 Clay Time: Creativity Without One “Correct” Answer

Creative activities such as Clay Time are also incorporated into the children’s learning experience.

Each child receives materials and is given the space to shape, combine and create based on their own ideas. Some may make animals, while others simply let their imagination take the lead.

When there is no single “correct answer”, children are given more room to express themselves and explore their own ideas.

Sometimes, children are not unable to focus — they simply have not yet found an activity they genuinely want to engage in.

🦜 When a Little “Animal Teacher” Joins the Class

During one of the sessions, the children also had a very special visitor — an African Grey Parrot.

The children gathered around with curiosity, excitement and plenty of questions, while some cautiously moved closer for a better look.

Seeing a real animal up close can feel very different from only learning about animals through books or pictures. It also gives children opportunities to learn:

💚 How to observe real animal behaviour and movement

It may not look like a traditional “lesson”, but experiences like these can become some of the most memorable learning moments for young children.

🌱 At Ages 4–6, Learning Is About More Than “How Much They Can Write”

Children at this stage still need to build strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and classroom learning. But beyond reading, numbers and writing, it is also worth paying attention to whether a child is willing to try, confident enough to ask questions, able to focus on a task and curious about new experiences.

Instead of only receiving answers, children are given opportunities to observe, experiment and discover through the learning process.
